Last week, we were privileged to host a joint event with The Economist Educational Foundation for our Teach2030 Ambassadors. The aim was to introduce their annual competition, which focuses on youth empowerment through their global prize for educators, sponsored by ROLEX. These initiatives strive to transform classrooms by fostering critical thinking and celebrating the leadership of teachers.
Empowering the Next Generation of Critical Thinkers
Established in 2012, The Economist Educational Foundation beautifully blends investigative journalism with deep pedagogical expertise.
Their primary mission is to empower young people aged 10 to 16 with the media literacy and communication skills required to navigate a fast-changing world. Their flagship platform provides free teaching resources centred on major news headlines; transforming current affairs into engaging lessons on climate change, global politics, technology, and finance.
Launching the “Loneliness” Global Competition
During our recent workshop, 17 ambassadors received bespoke guidance about the Foundation’s upcoming competition, which launches this September, with this year’s deeply relevant focus being loneliness.
This enriching session was made possible by the dedication of the Foundation’s CEO, Flora Letanka, and their School Engagement Lead, Isabelle Parkin, who designed and led the informative session.
Amongst the prizes, winners receive a publication in The Economist, a feedback workshop from an Economist editor and £1000 for their school to make their community connection ideas a reality. This workshop was therefore a rare and valuable opportunity for our ambassadors to access insights they might not have encountered otherwise and to ask poignant questions about implementation.
Celebrating Educators: The Leadership for Change Prize
The aim is for ambassadors to not only participate, but also to introduce the competition to their own communities. For the over 46,500 teachers enrolled in Teach2030 who work in low-resource settings across the Commonwealth, opportunities like this are truly life-changing. It is a chance to be globally recognised and to be a part of a wider, global network of teachers. Further building on our Teach2030 community, it allows for greater support internationally, something many of our teachers struggle to gain locally due to both a lack of resources and prioritisation of professional development.
We believe in going the extra mile to provide access to growth to educators worldwide — opening doors, making introductions, and illuminating what is possible for teachers everywhere.
