How my teaching style has evolved through a growth mindset

by Alicia Souares, Jamaica

Teaching is a journey, not a destination. Over the years, I have learned that effective teaching is not only about delivering content but about shaping attitudes, building confidence, and nurturing a love for learning. Completing the Growth Mindset course has been a transformative experience that significantly reshaped my teaching style and my understanding of how students learn.

From Fixed Expectations to Growth Possibilities

Before engaging with the Growth Mindset framework, my teaching approach was largely centered on outcomes—correct answers, completed tasks, and meeting grade-level standards. While structure and expectations are important, I now recognize that this mindset unintentionally placed limits on some students. The course challenged me to move away from fixed assumptions about ability and to embrace the belief that intelligence and skills can be developed through effort, strategies, and perseverance.

As a result, I now view mistakes as learning opportunities rather than failures. This shift has changed how I respond in the classroom—both to students’ work and to their struggles. I am more attentive and more focused on what my students are doing and how best I can maximize their true potential.

Emphasizing Effort, Process, and Progress

One of the most impactful changes in my teaching has been how I give feedback. Instead of focusing solely on results, I intentionally highlight effort, improvement, and problem-solving strategies. Phrases such as “You haven’t mastered this yet” or “I can see how hard you worked on this” have replaced language that unintentionally labeled students by ability.

This has encouraged students to take risks, ask questions, and persist through challenges without fear of being judged.

Creating a Safe and Supportive Learning Environment

The Growth Mindset course helped me understand the importance of emotional safety in learning. I now strive to create a classroom culture where students feel comfortable making mistakes and learning from them. Group discussions, peer collaboration, and reflective activities are intentionally designed to promote openness and mutual respect.

Students are more willing to participate, share ideas, and support one another because they know growth—not perfection—is the goal.

Shifting My Role as a Teacher

My role has evolved from being the sole source of knowledge to becoming a facilitator of learning. I now guide students in setting goals, reflecting on their progress, and developing strategies to overcome challenges. This approach empowers students to take ownership of their learning and builds resilience that extends beyond the classroom.

Impact on Student Engagement and Confidence

Since adopting a Growth Mindset approach, I have observed noticeable improvements in student confidence and engagement. Students who once doubted their abilities now show greater persistence and motivation. They are more willing to try, fail, and try again—understanding that growth is a process.

My Ongoing Growth as an Educator

Perhaps the most meaningful outcome of the Growth Mindset course is the reminder that teachers, too, are learners. I continue to reflect on my practice, adapt the new strategies that I learned , and remain open to improvement. Embracing a Growth Mindset has not only enhanced my teaching style but has also deepened my passion for education. I believe that every teacher should do this course to improve their students’ well-being.

Conclusion

The Growth Mindset course has fundamentally changed how I teach, how I view my students, and how I view myself as an educator. By fostering perseverance, resilience, and a love for learning, I am better equipped to help students reach their full potential—one step, one mistake, and one success at a time.
